Countdown to the World of Outlaws Return to Las Vegas: 10 Days
Concord, NC— February 16, 2009—The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Thursday, February 26. The series has competed at the half-mile in 11 different seasons dating back to 1996. For 11 consecutive days the events from each of those years will be highlighted in chronological order, continuing today with the series four races at the half-mile in 1997.
Sammy Swindell, the three-time World of Outlaws champion, won the second World of Outlaws event at Las Vegas on February 7, 1997. He led the final 13 laps of the preliminary feature after 20-time series champion Steve Kinser got tangled up with a lapped car while leading. Other current World of Outlaws drivers that competed in the event included: Jac Haudenschild who finished third, Danny Lasoski who was sixth, Donny Schatz who was 11th, and the aforementioned Kinser. The night began with Stevie Smith lowering the track record to 14.340 seconds in time trials.
The following night it was a Swindell in Victory Lane again, with Sammy’s brother Jeff picking up the $10,000 top prize. Sammy led the first three laps, before a mechanical problem ended his night while out front. Jeff took the lead on the 5th circuit and wound up leading the rest of the way. Haudenschild was third with Kinser sixth, Lasoski seventh and Schatz 11th.
The World of Outlaws returned to Las Vegas to wrap up the 1997 season with a two-night event. Nearly 70 cars packed the pit area, with Stevie Smith leading all 30 laps on the opening night to pick up the preliminary feature win. Steve Kinser finished fifth, with Jac Haudenschild seventh. Other current World of Outlaws drivers that were in action included: Danny Lasoski, Craig Dollansky, Sammy Swindell, Donny Schatz, Joey Saldana and Jason Meyers.
The following night saw Jeff Swindell pick up his second win of the year at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, edging his brother Sammy. Steve Kinser was fourth, with Dollansky seventh and Haudenschild 10th. Current World of Outlaws drivers that also competed in the event included: Saldana who was 11th, Schatz who was 12th, as well as Lasoski and Meyers.
