Saturday, September 19, 2009 – Bixby, OK native Shane Stewart driving for Hoosier’s Joe Gaerte and Tim Norman took the checker’s on both nights of the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. Driving the #3G entry sponsored and powered by Gaerte Engines, to victory in the preliminary feature on Friday night along with Brian McDonald. He would back that 15 lap feature win up with a $9,000 victory in the 30 lap feature on Saturday night. The 3/8 mile oval hosted the 5th Annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. With a growing purse and growing car counts, this year’s edition saw 77 cars take to the clock for time trials. Turn two resident and track owner Glenn Styres would take fast time with a 14.288 lap. With cars coming from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec the Canadian element was covered. With Sprints On Dirt, Empire Super Sprints and the Patriot Sprints bringing several cars each, the US contingent was well represented. Not to mention former World of Outlaw traveller Paul McMahon was racing for Albertan Dennis MacEachern. This event speaks volumes about the promoter Ken Pelkie and the entire crew at Ohsweken. Not to mention all participating series not booking shows against each other. It certainly opened my eyes to the strength of winged 360 sprint cars. With all of the US racers having so many options in their own country all summer, September seems to be the right time to hold this race.
