Hurricane Scott Hantz rolls through Toledo victory lane once more

August 14th (TOLEDO, Ohio) - The Indiana based CRA Super Series made their annual trip to the Glass City and it's famed high banked oval. 28 cars would be entered for the 100 lap event. In all the Gold Cup outlaw late model races held at Toledo this year the Richard Poe Motorsports #72 of Scott Hantz would dominate taking the checkers in all three events. At last weekends Berlin Raceway (MI) event the Angola, IN based team had planned on debuting a new Finish Line Fabricating chassis. Mother Nature had other plans and the car would have to wait a week to see some asphalt. High temps and the chance to meet a NASCAR villain would pack the front stretch grandstands. Toledo was also holding their annual Racer's Reunion featuring several historic coupes, sprint cars, midgets and super modifieds along with some retired drivers. After CRA qualifying these cars would take to the track for some parade laps, much to the thrill of the fans.

OHSWEKEN, Ont. (July 31) – Andrew Reaume of Blenheim, Ont. scored a $2,000 victory on Awesome Racewear night at Ohweken Speedway. The driver who has dominated at his home track, South Buxton Raceway with 9 consecutive wins, won after leading 22 of 25 laps.

Ed Carley and Brett Reaume led the 17 car field to the green, but a lap one caution slowed the field as Tim MacKenzie hit the backstretch wall, ending his evening. On the restart, Carley pulled ahead, while Andrew Reaume was working his way through the pack. On lap four, Reaume took the lead and never looked back. 12th place starter Chris Ross was on the move, making it to third by lap nine.

Mike Lewis blew a left rear tire on lap sixteen, clipping the inside wall in turn one, sending him to the infield. Back under green, Reaume held off Carley in lapped traffic, while Ross tracked down the top two. On lap twenty-three, Carley pulled off the track after losing an engine. Ross moved into 2nd and got one more chance to catch Reaume after Paul Rivait stopped in turn four to bring out a caution. With one lap to go, Reaume was able to hold on. Ross came across second, followed by Brett Reaume.

Notes: Reaume's No. 88 is sponsored by SM Freight, Westside Performance Plus and Clarke Drainage Contractors. ... Reaume's only other finish this season at Ohsweken was 5th in his B-Main during the WoO show on June 18th.

Russ Wood, Jeff Bloom win Fastest Short Track Show in the World

Friday, June 12, 2009, Toledo, OH – The Fastest Short Track Show in the World just may be one of my favorite races of the year. What is the fastest short track show in the World? It’s lighting fast ISMA Super Modified’s and the always fast AVSS Super Sprints racing on the high banked half mile in Toledo, Ohio. This event is the only ISMA race on the schedule that uses qualifying to determine starting position. After a rainout in 2008 both series were ready to tackle the low 13, high 12’s track records set in 2007. Back in May Frank Kimmel won the ARCA pole with a 16.265 in a stock car. With 27 Supers and 25 Sprints filling the pits the early afternoon crowd had gathered for the once yearly show. ISMA hit the track first and the ‘Rowley Rocket’ Chris Perley took the famed black #11 to the track for a blistering 12.893 second lap, the first sub 13 second lap for a supermodified at Toledo. This also broke Cameron Dodson’s 2007 AVSS record of 12.902. The bragging rights had been won by the East coaster’s in their bad ass lightweight big block machines.

Next up would be the Winged warriors of the AVSS, the series who race out of Michigan and hit tracks in Ohio, Indiana and Ontario as well. Canadian Ryan Litt would start out fast on his qualifying lap, but would only make it into turn one when disaster would strike. Coming out of turn two, the left rear hub would break sending the orange and white #07 Beast chassis spinning hard and fast into the back stretch retaining wall. After losing both wings and taking out the track safety light the OTC, BS&B Radiator sponsored sprinter would come to a stop just past midway on the straight away. With in seconds Ryan would pop out of the car unscathed. Litt had previously told me of how fun it was running Toledo “flat out the whole way round”. After some repairs to the track and cleanup AVSS qualifying would resume. The Dowker powered #42 of Jason Blonde would blister the track with a 12.774 lap reclaiming the title of fastest short track series. The rest of qualifying would be uneventful.

After heat race wins by Mike Ordway Jr., Jeff Holbrook and Trent Stephens all 27 cars would line up for the 50 lap feature. Mike Lichty would lead early, losing the lead to Dave Shullick Jr on lap 29. 1oth place starter Perley would drop back as far as 13th. After a short caution for the #35 of Jeff Holbrook spinning in turns 1 and 2, the field would bunch up on the restart taking out Mark Sammut, Jeff Abold, Johnny Benson Jr.,Vern Romanski and several other cars out of the race. On lap 48 Bobby Bond’s 25 would slam the wall coming out of turn four, at the green Shullick would lose power bunching up the field. 2nd place Lichty would spin, 3rd place Perley would get a flat tire, relegating both cars to the back of the field with 2 remaining. This handed the lead to the Sweet Manufacturing Ltd. #29 of Russ Wood who had been running in the top 5 all night. With 2 to go Wood would claim the top spot at the checkers, followed by Ordway and Perley. Stevens was fourth and Lichty fifth, followed by Randy Burch, Mark Sammut, Rich Reid, Shullick Jr. and Ben Seitz.

Next up was the 30 lap feature for the Super Sprints. Michigan racing veteran Jeff Bloom would start the Eldora Speedway sponsored #26 on pole, with #9 Chad Goff starting 2nd. Bloom would keep the lead the entire race. This doesn’t mean that the race was boring, far from it. On the last lap Goff would pull up on the inside of Bloom who would manage to win by just a few feet. Kyle Flint would come home 3rd, Ryan Davis 4th and Blonde in 5th. Heat race wins would go to Goff, Jeff Banyas and Jimmy McCune. Davis would win the last chance race.

Ryan Gillenwater post 1st Buckeye Suoer Sprints win at Flat Rock Speedway

Saturday, May 17, 2009 – Ryan Gillenwater would post his 1st win with the Buckeye Super sprints, a pavement 305 winged sprint car series who race in Ohio, New York and Michigan. Talon Stephens would set fast time of the 10 cars entered at 10.688. Heat race winners were Zach Gibson and Tommy Kunz.

Starting in eighth place, he would take the lead late in the 25 lap feature. After several attempts to get the feature started Tim Buchanan would end up on the hook, and Tyler Dunn would restart from the rear. Chad Wilson would lead from the start, after Tim Buchanan and Dave Saxer would fall out. From then on the race would run green, until lap 17. A spinning Tommy Kunz would bring out the yellow and Gillenwater would restart 3rd behind Chad Wilson and Zach Gibson. With two laps to go he would pass Gibson in turn 3 and 4 and in the next turn pass Wilson for the lead. An elated Gillenwater would celebrate in Flat Rock Victory Lane with his proudest suppporters his mother and father.

Mansfield Replaces Nashville on 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series Schedule
TOLEDO, OH (2-20-09)-Mansfield Motorsports Park in Ohio will play host to an ARCA RE/MAX Series race on June 20, replacing an event previously scheduled for that date at the Music City Motorplex in Nashville, Tennessee.

The change in venue was approved by ARCA officials after promoter Joe Mattioli III reached an agreement with Mansfield Motorsports Park owner Mike Dzurilla to run the event at Mansfield.

"We've worked with Joe and the Mattioli family for decades, and this request falls under our guidelines for realigning an event date," said ARCA President Ron Drager. "Mansfield is a quality facility and we know how Ohio race fans have supported events like the ARCA RE/MAX Series at Toledo Speedway and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Mansfield in the past. We look forward to June 20."

Mansfield Motorsports Park opened in 2002, and hosted NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, ASA, USAR Pro Cup, ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series and numerous other events. MMP hosted eight racing weekends last season, but track management announced in December 2008 that economic conditions would cause the track to cease operations. The agreement between Mattioli and Dzurilla assures that there will be racing at Mansfield in 2009.

"Mansfield is a first class facility and Mike Dzurilla has an outstanding staff there," said Mattioli. "They have a great track record of producing spectacular events and I am thrilled to be working with them. It is the perfect track to showcase the exceptional competition of the ARCA RE/MAX Series."

The Mattioli family is well known for their ownership and management of Pocono Raceway. Pocono has hosted 47 ARCA RE/MAX Series events since the first in 1969. Joe Mattioli III promoted ARCA RE/MAX Series races at South Boston Speedway in Virginia and was the promoter at Music City Motorplex in Nashville from 2003 through 2008.

"I am honored to be working with Joe and his staff," said Dzurilla. "They bring to Mansfield a proven track record of professionalism that we have been striving towards for the past five years. In my opinion, we have the best and most loyal fans in the world, and I am ecstatic to be able to bring them a top quality racing event such as the ARCA RE/MAX Series."

The ARCA RE/MAX Series opened its 57th season of competition February 7 at Daytona Int'l Speedway with James Buescher winning, and will next see action April 5 at Salem Speedway in Indiana.

Countdown to the World of Outlaws Return to Las Vegas: 11 Days

Concord, NC— February 15, 2009—The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Thursday, February 26. The series has competed at the half-mile in 11 different seasons dating back to 1996. For 11 consecutive days the events from each of those years will be highlighted in chronological order, beginning with the series inaugural trip to half-mile on November 6, 1996.

Mark Kinser wrapped up his 1996 championship season in style, winning in the series debut at the state-of-the-art facility. The Indiana native took the lead from three-time World of Outlaws champion Sammy Swindell on the front straightaway on the 27th lap and would lead the final four circuits of the 30-lap contest. Kinser began the night by setting a new track record of 14.092 seconds in time trials with a very stout 44-car field in attendance. It marked the 42nd time he was quickest in qualifying during his championship campaign.

Current World of Outlaws drivers that competed in the series inaugural race at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway included: Swindell, who finished second, 20-time series champion Steve Kinser, who was third, along with Jac Haudenschild who was eighth. Also in action was Donny Schatz, the now three-time and defending series champion, as well as Danny Lasoski, the 2001 title winner. Craig Dollansky, who would go on to claim a World of Outlaws Gumout Series championship in 2000 also competed in the event.

For Mark Kinser it was the 27th A-Feature win of the 1996 season en route to his first of two World of Outlaws titles. The World of Outlaws have contested 22 A-Feature events at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with nine different drivers picking up wins in those races.

MATT HAWKINS 1988-2009

Matt Hawkins has passed away at the age of 21 in his home state of Georgia.

Matt will be remembered on the track for being the only driver to ever win in the ARCA RE/MAX Series and USAR Pro Cup Series in his first starts. Off the track, he was known as a exceptionally kind, polite and personable young man. Matt will be missed greatly by his family, friends and the racing community.

Brett Hearn just loves Valentine’s Day. Especially when its spent in victory lane at Volusia Speedway Park with a $5,000 check written in his name.

For the fifth time in the past six Advance Auto Parts Series Big-Block Modified mains held on February 14 at the popular Barberville, Florida oval, Hearn has been the first under the checkered flag. The New Jersey speedster wrestled the lead away from Andy Bachetti with nine laps to go and held on to close out the 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH with his 19th career triumph in the Sunshine State on Saturday.

Two-time Florida Tour ’09 feature winner Pat Ward posted his third top-five finish in the four-race mini tour to secure his second Alltel DIRTcar Nationals points title.

“It’s always good to win the big one, this will make the trip home very sweet,” remarked Hearn, 50, who continued his streak in gator country, winning at least one feature every year but 2007 since the DIRTcar Modifieds from the Northeast returned to Volusia in 1998. Hearn owns 19 victories in race weeks competition which is the standard for all divisions traveling south in the winter time. “After last night we tried a couple things.”

“We’ve been messing around like we normally do down here but I was really getting worried we were going to get shut out. I said we just gotta keep working. A lot of credit has to go to Andrew (Phillips, crew chief) and the crew for talking me into staying with this car for another night instead of unloading the old one. But it was on tonight, just a matter of perseverance,” Hearn figured.

Bachetti’s second-place run was good enough to place him second on the final points chart with Matt Sheppard and reigning Mr. DIRTcar Champion Billy Decker leading Ward across the stripe to fill out the front-five. Friday night winner Jamie Mills, Dale Planck, Jimmy Horton, Keith Flach and Frenchmen Mario Clair rounded out the top-10, the last to complete the entire 50-lap distance.

Pole-sitter Bachetti out-dragged front-row partner Billy Decker after a pre-race draw determined the first three rows in the 26-car Big-Block field. Ohioan Rex King Jr. came to a stop in turn four and on the ensuing restart Decker took command wheeling the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int'l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell mount.



Three more cautions over the next four laps kept the field in check, with Tim Kerr spinning in turn three/four and Dave Rauscher being towed off for his involvement in the same incident on lap nine. King slid high to come to rest in turn three/four on the 11th circuit, with tour rookie Brian Sadler parking his no. 5 McLallen Construction-Perkins Law Group/Bicknell high in turn one to bring out the yellow lights on the following circuit.



Bachetti remained on Decker’s rear bumper through every slowdown until returning to the point on the lap 12 restart. When Delaware driver Matt Jester looped out of turn three to instigate the final caution period, the ‘Wild Child’ led Hearn, Decker, Ward and Sheppard with nearly 30 laps left to run.



With the green lights remaining on for good, the leaders reached traffic at the halfway mark as they jockeyed for position lap after lap during the second half of the race. While Bachetti and Hearn seemed to pull away at will, Ward improved to third with 15 laps to go before losing his brakes and opening back up the door for Sheppard and Decker to pass through on lap 38.



Inching closer and closer with each passing lap, Hearn finally slipped under Bachetti in turn three on lap 42 and when the checkered flag unfurled the ‘Jet’ had authored a resounding victory by a full five car-lengths at the stripe.



“I was just watching Andy running the cushion and I knew sooner or later I was going to have to try and get down the middle to make something happen like I did late in the race on Thursday,” noted Hearn, following his 16th career win at Volusia to improve his DIRTcar Big-Block total to 346 which keeps him second on the all-time list. “Every time I started going down there I began gaining just a little bit, then we got into lapped cars which always plays a factor.”



Joining the top-three finishers and Ward in victory lane was Jeff Brownell, who participated in the awards ceremonies that presented $500 in cash and $500 in in Xtreme Lubricants Gear Lube and/or Hi-Performance Race Oil to the overall Big-Block Modiied winner.



“First, I have to thank Jeff as this is the first point fund we’ve run for down here,” said Ward, who earned his first Florida Tour title in 2004 by a scant two points over Hearn and Doug Hoffman. “He’s got top teams out there we’re running against and we appreciate his help.”



“The Gypsum car was good all week. Tonight I was coming on, had a good line and was moving in on Brett and Andy until losing a brake line. Those guys were still sailing. We’re happy with fifth and we’ll take her. I knocked the rear-end out of the car last night and the guys worked all day and the car was good all week wherever we put it,” Ward said.



With the 2009 Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH safely in the recordbook, teams packed up and headed home to get ready for the start of DIRTcar Northeast's 34th season at their hometrack. The first major event of the points season is the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified opener scheduled at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway on Saturday, March 28.

BARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 14, 2009 – Steve Francis saved his best for the last night of the 38th annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH.

With a stirring drive forward from the eighth starting spot to win the 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main that ended the 12-night mid-winter racing extravaganza at Volusia Speedway Park, Francis headed home to Ashland, Ky., with a smile on his face and $10,100 in his pocket.

“I shouldn’t say, ‘It was about time,’ because no racetrack ever owes you anything,” said Francis, whose best finish in the week’s five other Super Late Model events was a fourth in Thursday night’s WoO LMS season opener. “But when you struggle as much as we have down here, it just makes you feel good when you leave here with a win.

“Now we get to be the guy who won the last race – and we get a month to think about it.”

Francis, 41, nailed the UMP DIRTcar Hoosier tire choice for his Dale Beitler-owned Rocket car after a post-heat race shower dampened the half-mile oval and delayed the program for one hour. He reached second with a lap-20 pass of Jacksonville, Fla.’s Earl Pearson Jr. and then chased down race-long pacesetter Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., finally grabbing the top spot for good on lap 36.

Smith, who started from the outside pole in his Bloomquist Chassis mount, settled for a runner-up finish, 1.878 seconds behind Francis. The $5,000 outing came after the hopeful 2009 WoO LMS regular failed to qualify for the tour’s lidlifter on Thursday night due to a heat-race accident.

Rick Eckert of York, Pa., finished third in the Raye Vest Racing Bloomquist car, giving him four top-five finishes in six events during the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH.

Completing the top five was fifth-starter Kelly Boen of Henderson, Colo., who enjoyed his best finish of the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH, and Pearson, who ran as high as second after starting sixth. Both drivers were behind the wheel of Rocket cars.

Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who entered the evening’s action with back-to-back $10,000-plus victories in WoO LMS (Thursday) and UMP DIRTcar (Friday) competition, saw his hot streak end with a seventh-place finish. He started 12th.

Francis credited his 21st career WoO LMS triumph – the most of any driver on the national tour since 2004 – to his starting spot and tire choice.

“With the (heat) inverts (in the four UMP DIRTcar events) and how everything has played out, we haven’t been able to see the front of the field much this week,” said Francis, who previously won WoO LMS A-Mains during the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH in 2004 (the first WoO LMS event under the World Racing Group banner) and 2006. “Tonight we were finally able to start closer to the front and it made a big difference. We just didn’t have to kill our car the first 20 laps to get into contention. We were able to save some tires and some car.

“We went a little soft on tires because of the showers. I was afraid that after three or four laps we’d start seeing a black line, but I just saw some spotty black spots so I knew we could just keep chasing that cushion because we had on a little softer tires. Then we were able to save enough so we could go to the bottom and pass Brady (for the lead).”

Smith, 31, mourned the pair of caution flags that slowed the race, on lap 24 (for the stopped car of Batesville, Ark.’s Wendell Wallace) and lap 25 (a homestretch spin by Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa.).

“After the last restart I didn’t go as good,” said Smith, who built as much as a half-straightaway lead during the race’s first half. “I got some wheel spin, so I believe my right-rear sealed over. We actually had on a harder tire than (Francis), but that tire has got a tendency to seal over.

“I think if the race would’ve went all green we might’ve been able to hold on, but you always have ifs, ands or buts. We’re just happy we had a good run here to end our Speedweeks.”

Eckert, 43, thought tires and the mid-race caution flags were his downfall.

“I think Steve was a little bit softer on tires than us,” said Eckert. “I didn’t think the softer tires would’ve kept going the whole way, but those two cautions probably helped him more than us because his soft tires cooled down and it took me a while to get going after the restarts.”

Finishing in positions 6-10 was Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., who surged to fourth following the lap-25 caution flag but slipped backward because he couldn’t hold the outside groove; Richards; defending WoO LMS champion Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky.; 18th-starter Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn.; and Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga.

Lanigan’s quiet run left him winless during the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH, but his steady week – topped by three runner-up finishes – earned him the week’s overall points championship.

Fifty-six cars were entered in the evening’s action.

Chris Madden of Gaffney, S.C., was fastest in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials with a lap of 16.125 seconds.

Heat winners were Madden, Boen, Eckert, Pearson, Wallace and Brady Smith. The B-Mains were captured by Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, Ky., Tyler Ivey of Tallahassee, Fla., and Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn.

The WoO LMS will be idle until diving into an early-season ‘Month of Money’ beginning with a two-day show on March 13-14 at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Ala. Complete programs will be contested both nights – a 40-lap A-Main paying $7,000 to win on Friday and a 60-lap, $12,000-to-win finale on Saturday.

A total of $109,000 in first-place cash will be on the line over a four-week period that begins at Deep South and continues with the inaugural ‘Lone Star 100’ on March 20-21 at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas ($20,000 to win win); the Circle K Colossal 100 on March 27-28 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. ($50,000); and the ‘Illini 100’ on April 3-4 at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway ($20,000).

Rain Falls On Tomkins’ Parade Lap In Special Visit Down Under

Thirty one. That’s the total number of racing laps contested by Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series invader Gary Tomkins on his 2009 Australian tour after rain washed out his second and final race on Saturday night (Feb. 14). Tomkins was to contest in Round Two of the Roosters Cup V8 Dirt Modified Series at Charlton Raceway in Toowoomba, only for rain in the lead-up and the threat of more to come, seeing the race postponed to April 25, long after his return to the United States.

“It’s not really the way we wanted to finish our trip,” said Tomkins from the Toowoomba home of car owner Ray Klarich. “Unfortunately, that is the nature of the beast. We had that type of year at home too, though. We run at Canandaigua (NY) Speedway on Saturday and except for 3 or 4 nights when we raced there, it rained every time pretty much. It had to have been 15 times last year, it’s just the way the weather has been.”

Ironically, Toowoomba is a city that has suffered from a severe water shortage in recent times, and although the rain has disappointed the speedway fraternity, it was welcomed by the city’s residents.

“We did some tourist stuff Saturday morning and got back here early afternoon and it hadn’t rained a drop since,” Tomkins said. “It’s just one of those things, there is always the question in the back of your mind, could they have pulled it off. But I understand, there’s a lot of people coming from other classes that were arriving from far away and then you’ve got to worry about drawing fans so I understand the deal.”

Even though its not raining doesn’t mean they could have successfully pulled it off. Circumstances beyond anyone’s control saw Tomkins take to the track for just two heat races (8 laps each) and a shorted Feature race (15 laps) from a planned two race meetings. He finished fourth in his Lismore debut the previous weekend.

“In the race regard yes, it is disappointing,” Tomkins offered. “But we had a good time here. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we were at the Gold Coast vacationing, just my wife Susan and son Justin. I worked on the car a little but with Ray, nothing too strenuous, just hung out and relaxed really.”

After a whistlestop 11-day stay in Australia, the Tomkins family is now on its way back to their Clifton Springs (NY) home to continue with preparations for another busy season both at Canandaigua and on the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series, scheduled to kick off March 28 at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway with the first tour points event.

*Vauter Trades Clubs For Cars…His family business is golf although his personal passion is motorsports, and when its winter time up north Dan Vauter finds a way to head south when there’s racing on tap at Volusia Speedway Park. Fresh off one of his most productive seasons highlighted by three feature wins and 2nd in points at Penn-Can, the Forest City, Pennsylvania pilot has a pair of Bicknell rides and the Troyer car used in Florida at his disposal in 2009. “We’d like to follow more of the Advance Series but our location and lack of a weekly home track for points makes it tough for us to be a regular,” noted Vauter, 23, whose grandfather Paul Vauter converted the family-owned Meadow Breeze Farm into Panorama Golf Course in the early 1960s, with the former dairy barn renovated to become the clubhouse upon opening in 1964. “We led for the first time down here on Wednesday and 4th-place was almost like a feature win, but I think we can still do more before the week is over. We’re getting more confidence with every race.”

*Maryland Modifieds…Of the eight states and two Canadian provinces represented by Big-Block Modified teams in the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals, Jeff Brown and brother in-law Brad Trice are the lone contenders carrying Maryland on their shoulders for the week of speed in Florida. First visiting Volusia in 2007, Brown failed to qualify in two attempts and turned the wheel of his no. 9 Chesapeake Paving/Bicknell mount over to Brad with the same outcome. A division rookie in 2003, last summer marked Brown’s first full season in a Big-block and he finished 10th in points at Delaware Int’l Speedway posting a 2nd-place feature race best. “We were really green in ’07 and coming back there’s a lot more experience to draw from,” said Brown, 42, who suffered through steering issues on Wednesday (finished 21st) before a broken driveshaft sidelined him the next night in qualifying. “We’d love to finish in the top-10 but you have to be on the track at the end to do that.” Employed as an equipment operator under Chesapeake Paving & Excavating owner Brown, Trice qualified for his first-ever Big-Block main in the opener (18th) and added 21st and 16th-place tallies since. Team Troyer mainstay and Northeast Modified Hall of Fame award winning mechanic Randy Kisacky has served as his crew chief throughout the week. “I’ve learned so much from Randy already and there’s a long way to still to go,” said Trice, 26, son of former Georgetown Speedway points champion Gary Trice, who began racing go-carts at age 12, plans to run Delaware all year and hit the specials at Georgetown in between. “What it comes down to now is getting a good start in the heat, qualifying and starting up front. I’d love to come away with a top-10.”

*Greene Between Rocks & Hard Places…Pennsylvanian Darwin Green arrived in Barberville for qualifying on Wednesday already having four races under his belt in the Sunshine State. Following a unique schedule of events, Greene steered a Modified for owner Terry Zacharias on the asphalt at New Smyrna Speedway before unloading his Greene Quality Bluestone no. 1 Blue Diamond Tools/Bicknell mount ready to throw the clay at Volusia. “8 races in 10 days, now that’s a dream vacation,” beamed Greene, 38, who posted a 10th-place best at New Smyrna and made the first three shows at VSP, opening in 17th on Wednesday. The highly motivated driver from Susquehanna, Pa. captured his first career Modified win at Penn-Can last summer and as a record-setting cross-country runner in high school, lap after lap jogged around his car in victory lane in one of the most popular wins of the season. “Racing is something I think about every day and take to bed with me every night. I grew up a few minutes from ‘The Can’ and heard the motors revving every weekend. When you play the game, imagining every scenario and what you would do when you get that first win, I just did what came natural. Now I’m living that dream every time I buckle in,” remarked Greene, who mines bluestone quarries throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania primarily during the summer months, leaving the winter, spring and fall to indulge his appetite for dueling on the dirt.

*Rauscher Racing Again…In a reversal of fortune ---married for the past 27 years and traveling to Florida annually for the last 26 winters--- Dave Rauscher is contending in his third straight February at Volusia. His no. 48too Monadnock Disposal Service/Bicknell entry carried him to 14th on Thursday for the best ride of his short career on the ultra-fast half-miler. “Coming to Florida has always been about having fun, and now that the family is grown up I’m just moving that aspect from the stands to the pits,” said Rauscher, 53, manager of Magee Transportation Services by day, who scored no better than 21st the two years prior. “Things feel a lot better this week, we’re not only qualifying, we’re actually getting in some laps and finishing races. And when you’re out their racing you can’t help but have fun. We’ll keep coming back as long as things stay that way.”

*Vacation Plans On Hold…An annual traveler to Volusia for the wintertime bash throughout the new millennium, Rich Scagliotta is still in search of his first top-10 feature finish after 20 main events. He opened the ’09 Alltel DIRTcar Nationals with a 14th-place tally aboard his no. 8 Central Jersey Trailer & Hitch Depot-Adamsville Maintenance/Troyer entry although a first lap tangle on Friday forced him pitside with just one lap to his credit. “This is our vacation, not working our regular job and putting all the time into racing at the track. We’ll watch the Daytona 500 on Sunday then head home, all the guys have to get back to work next week. Volusia is always a challenge, its kinda like Hagerstown out there, you have to start up front or get by the guys ahead of you early. The track is so heavy and everybody is fast, the longer things go the harder it is for us to make a move.”

*Three Times A Charm For Friesen…In his Advance Series Big-Block Modified debut this week at Volusia, third-generation chauffeur James Michael Friesen needed three days to make the starting grid but it was well worth the wait for the rising star with his racing roots firmly entrenched in the city of St. Catharines, Ontario. Two successive DNQs were quickly forgotten as Friesen outlasted Jimmy Horton to take a checkered flag in the second qualifying heat and place 15th in the 30-lap main event on Friday. “We’ve just been doing a lot of learning trying to get comfortable and chasing away the nerves, racing out here against my heroes has certainly been a real treat,” remarked Friesen, 24, who only logged about a dozen laps the first two days, crashing on the frontstretch on day two resulting in heavy front-end damage to the no 52 Blue Moon Special powered by an Al Blanchard-prepared New Generation Racing Engine. “Despite the limited track time, this has still been a great experience and I’ll do my damndest to come back here next year and every year I can after that.”

Following two straight days of misfortune in the 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH, Friday the 13th was a blessing for Jamie Mills as he outlasted a late-race charge by Billy Decker to claim a narrow victory at Volusia Speedway Park.

Mills’ third career Advance Auto Parts Big-Block Modified feature win at the popular Barberville, Florida speedplant was worth $2,000 for the Blue Hen Racing team.

“I tell you what, our guys worked their butts off today and they really deserve this win,” exclaimed Mills, 38, who charged from 20th into the front-five on Wednesday before fading to sixth at the line while running on six cylinders. A turn one crash after completing just a dozen circuits dropped him to 25th on Thursday forcing his team to set the alarm for an early wake-up call on Friday morning.

“Tonight I even lost the power steering about the 20th lap. Hate to brag but I think I could’ve probably lapped most …..I don’t know who was behind me, that last 7 or 8 laps I figured I’m gonna wrestle this thing and it was a gorilla but we got it done. It’s either feast or famine for us here lately, we had two bad nights so hopefully we can turn it around and get that $5 grand tomorrow night,” added Mills, who last reached victory lane at Volusia in 2005, with his first checkered flag in Florida taken in 2000.

Over the final five laps Decker cut a half straightaway deficit to just three car-lengths at the stripe to secure runner-up honors in his ’09 Alltel DIRTcar Nationals Big-Block debut. Dale Planck settled into third for his second climb up the podium this week while Thursday night runner-up Matt Sheppard and opening night third-place finisher Andy Bachetti rounded out the front-five in the 30-lap finale.

Early race leader Jimmy Horton, second-generation upstart Rex King Jr., pole-sitter Randy Chrysler, two-time Florida Tour ’09 winner and points leader Pat Ward, and 2008 DIRTcar Racing Northeast Motorsports Safety Systems/G-FORCE Big-Block Modified Rookie of the Year By ButlerBuilt Larry Wight filled out the final top-10.

Luck of the draw among the top-two qualifiers in each heat put Chrysler on the point yet outside pole-sitter Horton carried the momentum high out of turn four to lead the 26-car pack around the fast half-miler. A turn one-two jam-up sent Guy Sheldon and Rich Scagliotta into the pits with just one lap complete, while Brad Trice and Wight rejoined the field and Jeremy Markle returned to the track two laps down. With the yellow lights still on, Ward made an unexpected trip down pit row to change a left-rear tire.

Back under green flag conditions, Horton was only able to hold back Mills for just one more lap as the Delaware driver blasted from sixth aboard the no. 30 I.G. Burton Car Dealership/Bicknell machine and forged the final lead change on lap three in a bold three-wide maneuver down the back stretch that disposed of both Horton and Chrysler.

In one of the most dramatic incidents of Race Weeks ’09 ---definitely the most serious in three days of Big-Block racing--- veteran Alan Johnson slammed into the parked vehicle of Jeff Brown between turns three and four to force out a rare red flag. ‘A.J. Slideways’ was uninjured after the spectacular spill yet owner Bob Schneider’s wadded up Troyer mount was scraped off the track and loaded into the hauler to begin an early trip back up north.

With a pair of caution periods also slowing the initial two feature races, the second yellow flag flew on lap six in Friday’s main when Keith Flach slowed low exiting the first turn. Ward was once again involved in the early race mishap that turned out to be the last break in the action as the final 25 laps were run off caution-free with an unexpectedly close finish filling the bill.

“I just thought the lapped cars were holding (Jamie) up a little bit, he was really hooked up I’ll tell you,” remarked Decker, 44, crowned the overall Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Champion in 2008, after the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers/Bicknell mount fell just a half-second short of Mills at the line. “Obviously, something happened because we closed on him pretty fast right at the end.”

“Our car was pretty good, too. I was having a fun time dicing it out with Dale, I’d miss a turn and he’d sneak it up in there. I was just roughing it up there on the cushion at the end and had a lot of fun doing it,” Decker added.

With non-stop action circling the entire track in the latter stages, the battle for position carried on as 15th-place starting Planck and 13th starter Sheppard crowded the top-five before the halfway mark. Horton was the last to be left out with a handful of laps to go as Bachetti dropped him from the front-five as the last laps clicked off.

“This place is really a lot of fun,” offereed Planck, 38, after pulling to within eight points of ninth-place finisher Ward in the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals standings with just one more show on the docket. “Last night we just missed the set-up totally. I had a good car in the heat race (Thursday), changed everything around and I shouldn’t have changed a thing.”

“Tonight we didn’t have so good a heat race, changed stuff around and it was better. I seem to go from one extreme to another, either last or first. But as long as the car turns ….. its gotta be able to turn here. We’ve got one more chance tomorrow, maybe its our turn finally to have it all fall into place,” Planck said.

Planck and the rest of the field will get one more chance to catch Ward as the Advance Auto Parts Modifieds return to Volusia for their last appearance this weekend. Richards Pockets Another $10,000 For Winning Friday’s UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model Finale At Volusia Speedway Park

BARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 13, 2009 – Josh Richards is scrawling his name all over the 38th annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH.

The 20-year-old sensation from Shinnston, W.Va., rolled to his second $10,000 victory in as many nights on Friday, capturing the mid-winter racing extravaganza’s 40-lap UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model finale at Volusia Speedway Park.

Richards continued his February assault on dirt tracks in the Sunshine State, winning for the second time during the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH and fifth time overall in Florida over a one-week span. He authored a virtual repeat of his triumph in the previous night’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series season opener.

“To win three last week and two this week is pretty unreal,” said Richards, who joined Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., as the only drivers since 2004 to win the week-ending UMP DIRTcar special and a WoO LMS event during the same Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH. “It’s starting to sink in a little bit, but I still don’t even know what to say.

“We did everything exactly the same (as Thursday night) – qualified the same, ran the heat race the same, ran the same tires in the feature. The track was just a little bit wetter tonight so you had to be down against the brown in (turns) three and four, but everything worked out great again.”

Richards, who started fifth in Friday’s extra-distance A-Main, moved steadily forward in his Mark Richards Racing Enterprises Rocket car to grab the lead from outside-polesitter Moyer on lap 13. He was never seriously challenged for the remainder of the event, which was slowed by a single caution flag, on lap 31 for a turn-four spin by Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, Wis.

Rick Eckert of York, Pa., slipped by Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., for second place following the lap-31 restart and finished there in his Raye Vest Racing Bloomquist Chassis car. He crossed the finish line 1.939 seconds behind Richards.

Defending WoO LMS champion Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., who started eighth, advanced two spots after the restart to claim third in his Rocket mount. Ninth-starter Scott James of Greendale, Ind., got his Scott Riggs-owned Rocket car hooked up on the outside of the half-mile oval over the final nine circuits to vault from eighth to a fourth-place finish, while Clanton, who started from the pole position, faded to fifth at the checkered flag in his RSD Enterprises Rocket machine.

Four of the top five finishers were regulars on the WoO LMS, which ends the 38th annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH on Saturday night (Feb. 14) with a 50-lap event paying $10,000 to win. James was the only driver who doesn’t follow the national tour.

Eckert, 43, registered his best finish of the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals, improving upon the third-place run he enjoyed on Wednesday night. He hasn’t finished outside the top 10 in the week’s five events but is still searching for the extra speed to reach Victory Lane.

“We just lack a little bit,” said Eckert. “I can’t get quite as aggressive getting into the corners as Josh can. Exiting the corner I might be a little bit better, but I can’t hustle in there like he can.”

Eckert paused, and then quipped with a smile, “I think we’re gaining on it and getting better every night, but it’s looking like we might run out of nights.”

Finishing in positions 6-10 was Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., who started 11th; Darren Miller of Milledgeville, Ill.; 19th-starter Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky.; Billy Decker of Unadilla, N.Y.; and 20th-starter Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn.

Moyer, who won three times during last year’s Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH, pulled out of the event during the lap-31 caution flag while running third due to a broken lifter in his engine.

Earlier in the night Moyer turned the overall fastest lap of the 64-car group time-trial session, roaring around the track in 16.021 seconds.

Other group fast-timers included Dillon Wood of Daytona Beach, Fla. (16.125), Eckert (16.352), Chris Madden of Gaffney, S.C. (16.086), Bloomquist (16.354) and Miller (16.402).

Heat winners were Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., Moyer, Eckert, Richards, Schlieper and Clanton. The B-Mains were captured by Francis, Owens and Eddie Carrier Jr. of Salt Rock, W.Va.

The 38th annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH conclude on Saturday (Feb. 14) with a doubleheader headlined by the WoO LMS. A 50-lap finale for the big-block Modifieds of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series is also part of the program, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

DIRTcar West Driver Spotlight: Chris Shannon – 2008 DIRTcar Western Allstars Late Model Series Champion

Chris Shannon might not be a household name to many, but the 2008 DIRTcar Western Allstars Late Model Series champion is undoubtedly on the path to gain a reputation as one of the better DIRTcar Late Model drivers in the country.

Shannon, who hails from Merced, Calif., decided 2009 was an ideal time to test his luck on the East Coast for the first time, entering the 38th annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.

“We just decided to come out here, play our hand and race with the best,” said Shannon, a former paved-track competitor in the early- to mid-‘90s on the NASCAR Southwest Tour. “DIRTcar has supported us on the West Coast and so I thought we could come out here to Florida and support DIRTcar.”

Shannon, who chased down Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas, Calif., to claim the 2008 DIRTcar Western Allstars crown without the benefit of a feature win, has enjoyed the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH and is looking forward to the 2009 campaign in the Golden State.

“It would be tremendous to win (at Volusia), but right now our whole goal is just to make a race,” said Shannon, who through Friday (Feb. 13) had failed to qualify for any of the four Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH A-Mains (three UMP DIRTcar events, one World of Outlaws Late Model Series program). “You have the best guys in the country racing here at Volusia. We’re just going to do our best.”

The 42-year-old driver is anxious to get things started in 2009 out west. After his February sojourn to Florida, Shannon will make the 50-plus-hour haul back home and get ready to attempt to defend his Western Allstars title.

“We’re going to run the DIRTcar Western Allstars and contend for the championship,” said Shannon, who puts everything into his racing program that he can while making a living running the family business, Shannon Pump Co.

Shannon, who runs cars built by the Bakersfield, Calif.-based Victory Circle Chassis, is excited about the potential for success and recognition for himself and drivers in the DIRTcar Western Region.

“Just the publicity that we got from DIRTcar and World Racing Group, it got our names out there,” commented Shannon. “It loops us in with the World of Outlaws and DIRTcar Racing.”

Track Spotlight: Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway Blast Into March

DIRTcar Racing once again rumbles into the 2009 season in the Midwest with the second edition of ‘March Madness’ on March 6-7 at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City, Ky.

The event has featured some of the biggest names in UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model competition throughout its existence. Previous winners include 2007 World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion Steve Francis and Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark.

Not only do fans get to experience the best names in UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model competiton, the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds are on the docket as well. Drivers will compete for a total of over $55,000 in purse money in the Late Model portion of the program -- $5,000 to win on Fri., March 6, and $7,500 to win on Sat., March 7 – and the Modifieds will battle each night in $2,000-to-win features offering purses of $8,400.

“The payout is excellent is all the way down through the field,” said promoter Sherri Heckenast. “We’ve had drivers contact us from as far away as New York already, and we’ve usually had drivers from Canada and Minnesota make an appearance.”

The ever-popular, three-eighths-mile oval, which is proclaimed the “Taj Mahal of Dirt Racing,” hosts other major events such as the Commonwealth Cup, Battle of the Mods and the Bluegrass Nationals.

“The facility is in really good shape and we’ve had a really good track the past events.” Said Heckenast. “When people come to Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway, there’s not a person who doesn’t like the facility.”

With a weather date set for March 8 and the March 13-15 weekend set aside in case of prolonged wet or cold weather, those fans who have been clamoring for racing action all winter can expect to start the season off with an excellent UMP DIRTcar event.

UMP DIRTcar: Landers Dominates Action at 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals; Ocala Opens Modified Season

Young Batesville, Ark., driver Jared Landers has had a reputation for performing well at Volusia Speedway Park in UMP DIRTcar Modified competition during the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH, but even he didn’t see his success coming in the form of back-to-back feature wins to kick off the two-week-long dirt-track festival.

Landers became a father in August of 2008 and has been on quite a roll since. Before coming to Florida, every race Landers entered where his new son, Madden, was in attendance, he won.

The Midwestern standout reeled off five wins in seven starts – including the inaugural $5,000-to-win ‘Gator Championship’ event on Feb. 8 – and captured the overall Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH points title.

The 2009 UMP DIRTcar Modified season officially kicked off the weekend prior to the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Ocala (Fla.) Speedway.

Racing on a card headlined by the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series regular Kenny Wallace held off Jeff Mathews to claim victory the first night of the Ocala UMP DIRTcar Modified meet after the original kickoff date was rained out. Night 2 was captured by New Yorker Randy Hall, who held off the familiar JEGS No. 36 of Wallace for the victory. Hall also won a qualifying night the following week at Volusia Speedway Park, making him one of three UMP DIRTcar Modified drivers eligible for the Alltel DIRTcar All-Star competition at www.alltelallstar.com.

DIRTcar NorthEast: Teams Take Show On The Road

While more than 30 DIRTcar Northeast big-block Modified teams are currently competing in the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH from Feb. 11-14, Empire State big-block standout Gary Tomkins is also getting a head start on the ’09 season with a racing trip halfway around the world to Australia.

Tomkins, a regular on the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series, began his second Australian tour with a fighting fourth-place finish at the Lismore Speedway on Sat., Feb. 7. He has reunited with Australian racer Ray Klarich for a two-race campaign which will end with this Saturday night’s (Feb. 14) Roosters Cup round in Toowoomba.

The Clifton Springs, N.Y., veteran is driving the same Bicknell chassis – powered by a Small-Block – he campaigned during the 2007 Advance Series numbered 84, a car Klarich purchased at the end of that season.

On Feb. 7 at the demanding, almost circular, Lismore bullring, Tomkins crossed the line in first position in both his qualifying heat races. However, he was penalized two positions in his first heat for passing on the infield. The results were enough to earn Tomkins top qualifier honors, although drawing the ‘6’ marble in the inversion would force him to start outside the third row alongside eventual race winner Mark Robinson.

Originally slated for 30 laps, the main event was cut to just 15 laps after Keith Muller rolled his ‘Keith-4-Wheels’ backed Bicknell in front of the main grandstand, embedding it upside down in the catch fence. With the strict 10:30pm curfew fast approaching, Promoter David Lander had little alternative but to cut the race distance in half, leaving Tomkins with a fourth-place finish.
